FAQ: All the answers to your questions.

Here you will find all the answers about storing at Zebrabox: how to book, what sizes are available, cancellation periods and dos and don'ts.

General

Self-storage involves storing commercial or personal items externally in a private storage unit. It can be a short-, medium- or even a long-term or permanent solution.

For example, self-storage is often used when moving house, during home renovations or when relocating abroad. Furniture, books, shoes and clothes can be stored temporarily in a self-storage unit. Reasons for long-term storage can include needing to store belongings during house extension projects or wanting a safe, regulated place to keep delicate or expensive items. Large furniture, such as beds, tables, chairs, wardrobes or other big items such as suitcases or sports equipment can be stored in a rented storage unit while not in use.

Businesses often use a commercial storage unit to store documents, files and goods in an archive storage system or to enable them to keep sales products readily to hand.

The self-storage industry originates from the USA and it has also become an established sector in Europe. Today's Zebrabox was founded in 1979 under the name Ministorage AG and was a pioneer in the Swiss self-storage sector.

Size & volume

The storage units start from small 1m3 lockers and increase through an infinite range of possible sizes up to large storage units of 70m2.

Costs & Payment

The cost varies from storage unit to storage unit, it is therefore not possible to provide a general answer. The price depends on the location, size, duration and capacity. You can calculate the cost very easily online.

Apart from the mandatory insurance, there are no additional fees to be added to the monthly rate. If the Client, whether an individual or a business, cannot provide proof of insurance from a well-established and solvent insurance company, they have the option to subscribe to the multi-risk insurance policy taken out by Zebrabox on behalf of its clients.

The invoice is automatically sent by email. Upon request, the invoice can be mailed to you for an additional monthly fee of 3 €.

Invoices are usually sent monthly. On request, invoices can be issued quarterly, half-yearly or yearly.

If you rent your storage unit for a long period, it’s advisable to set up a standing order. On-site, we accept all major debit and credit cards for payments.

You can pay online with most standard debit and credit cards:

  • American Express
  • Debit
  • MasterCard
  • Visa

When booking online, you can enter the voucher code in the fifth step “Summary” under the calculated amount payable and the discount will be automatically deducted.

If you book on site or over the phone, you can simply give your voucher code to our customer service staff and they will credit you the amount.

We will of course inform you if an invoice has not been paid. If we still do not receive the payment after several requests then access to the storage unit will be blocked until the outstanding invoices have been settled.

Booking & Contract

You can reserve a storage unit online, by phone, or on-site during opening hours.

Storage units can be rented for a minimum of 15 days.

Whether you book via e-mail, telephone or on site we only need a valid ID and the contract details. After signing the contract and paying the first invoice, you can move your items straight into your storage unit.

When booking online, it is not necessary to sign the contract. You also have the option to verify your identity directly online, this allows you to receive the access code for your storage unit straight away. If you prefer not to verify your identity online, select the option “verify on site” and our customer service staff will contact you. Your access code will only be issued after your identity has been verified.

During the online booking process, you will be asked to hold your ID or driver's license in the camera of your smartphone. After successful verification, the booking process is completed. Immediately afterwards, you will receive your personal access code by SMS to enter the Zebrabox building.

For this purpose, we use the service of the specialized company PXL Vision AG. The data is used exclusively for identification to complete this transaction.

Provisional bookings cannot be made online. Short-term reservations are however possible, just contact our customer service advisers.

That means that this size of storage unit is currently not available at your chosen location. However, this can change quickly. If you would like to know when this size will become available or whether there is another solution, contact our customer service advisers.

Yes. Call the relevant Zebrabox site to discuss your storage requirements. In these cases, we work flexibly together with you to find a solution. It’s not unusual for our customers to switch to a smaller or bigger storage unit if their storage volume requirements change.

There are no additional costs – apart from the rent increase when upgrading to a bigger Zebrabox. Likewise, if you change to a smaller Zebrabox then you will of course only pay the rental fee for the new unit.

Yes. As long as you don't terminate the contract, it will be extended automatically by one month.

Insurance

Yes. Insurance to cover your possessions against the risk of fire, water and theft is mandatory. The minimum insurance values vary depending on the size of the storage unit and the value of the goods.

 Value (€)Price per month (€)
1 - 6m32000.-2.00
7m3 +5000.-5.00

  • We recommend that you carefully consider the value of your items and never underestimate. Otherwise, you risk underinsurance in the event of a claim.

Yes. The insurance will be terminated at the same time as your Zebrabox.

Notice of termination

You can cancel at any time, with a notice period of 14 days. The only prerequisite is that the minimum storage rental period must have elapsed. If you have already paid for an additional period, the excess amount paid for the extra days will be reimbursed together with the deposit.

You can notify us of the cancellation easily using our contact form or by e-mail or phone. You will then receive a written confirmation of your cancellation as well as important information about returning the storage unit and key.

  • The storage unit must be completely emptied and swept clean.
  • Put the keys (without padlock) as well as any badges into the envelope marked “Box Return”. Drop the filled envelope into the box marked "Key Return" up to the date of termination or hand everything in at the reception. We will then issue the final invoice for your storage unit.
  • If the storage unit is not emptied or the keys are not returned then invoicing will automatically continue despite cancellation.
Usage

If your storage unit is in the main warehouse (left building), you can access it during opening hours using the keys to your personal padlock.

If your unit is in the secondary warehouse (right building), you can access it using the Zebrabox App and manage the alarm for your storage space directly once inside. You can access your storage space free of charge every day from 6am to 10pm. If needed, 24-hour access can be arranged upon request.

Yes. We can provide several badges and keys for friends and relatives on request. Simply tell our customer service staff what you require when setting up your contract. All badges and keys must be returned at the end of the contract. In the Zebrabox App you can manage accesses on your own.
